Name
What's in a name? A lot. Sometimes without realizing it, we take on many of the aspects behind the meaning of our names. From research over a few name meaning websites (some don't even list the name "Zelda" in their databases), I think "Zelda" was the perfect fit for our princess.
From Name Meanings: Woman warrior.
From 2000-Names.com: Grey battle maid (German); Happiness, joy (Yiddish).
Many of us know that the creators of The Legend of Zelda named her after Zelda Fitzgerald, but I wonder if they knew anything about the meaning behind the name Zelda. The first meaning is the most poignant to Zelda's character; she is truly a woman warrior, the way she places herself in danger for the greater good. The German meaning behind "Zelda" from the second website puzzles me. As I just said, she isn't afraid to face danger head-on, but the "grey" part actually means "grey haired". Zelda definately does not have grey hair, but the "battle maid" part is true. "Happiness, joy" describe what she hopes for the future of Hyrule and its inhabitants; she too is filled with happiness to see the joy on the faces of her loved ones.
