Princess Zelda
Princess Zelda is the beloved ruler of the kingdom of Hyrule (or future ruler, depending on what game you're playing).
Unlike many other video game princesses who end up captured by the antagonist, Zelda doesn't simply set inside her prison cell and wait for salvation; contrary, she seeks out information that may aid her returning savior Link. Whether it's through telekinetic abilities, meeting face-to-face while imprisoned, or passing on important information before the kidnapping actually takes place, Zelda never leaves Link in a lurch without any clues as to rescuing the princess and their home.
When faced with the possiblility of her and the citizens of Hyrule's death at the hands of Zant in Twilight Princess, Zelda did not hesitate to back down and surrender instead of blindly trying to win against an opponent against whom she would not win. Her compassion for her people and those she holds dear cannot be measured; one simply cannot hope to touch the selflessness of this princess.
Early on during The Ocarina of Time, Zelda's keen intellect, even at a young age, informs her to rightfully distrust the "man from the desert" (Ganondorf). She set to spying on the rogue carefully as he met with her father, knowing deep down his only desire was the destruction of Hyrule. Her intellect could be credited to her lineage; each princess before her who would someday rule over Hyrule was imbued with the power of Nayru, as each carried possession of the Triforce of Wisdom.
It's difficult to pin-point Zelda's exact personality, as it undergoes minor tweaks with every new installment. However players can certainly notice a trend of characteristic traits that has carried on with Zelda over the years: courageous, intelligent, selfless, and kind hearted. No matter what hat she's wearing in any of the many Legend of Zelda video games, animated series or comic book, these four main ingredients still manage to shine through in both her words and her actions. At the end of the day, whether she's leading a band of unkempt pirates or quietly practicing her archery skills, Princess Zelda will always be Zelda.
